In Search of the Chupacabra

About the show

Host Richard Syrett was joined by Fortean researcher Nick Redfern for a discussion on his recent travels investigating the continuing legacy of the fearsome chupacabra. The first accounts of the elusive beast come from Puerto Rico, he said. In 1995, ranchers there reported attacks on farm animals that had been found with puncture wounds in the neck and blood drained from their bodies, Redfern reported. Many of these animals were goats so the creature was dubbed chupacabra, or "goat sucker," he added.

Witnesses describe the chupacabra as roughly the size of a chimpanzee with a row of spikes down its back, Redfern continued. He recounted details from a rancher named John who had a face-to-face run in with the creature. According to John, the beast stood three to four feet tall, had an apelike body with a row of spikes running along its neck, and could walk/run on either two and four legs. Some witnesses also commented on the chupacabra's glowing red eyes (causing some to think the creature is supernatural) as well as its large, leathery batlike wings, Redfern revealed.

Redfern spoke about a rancher named Jorge who woke up one morning to find all of his chickens dead. Whatever had killed them had managed to unlatched all of the cages in the chicken coop, he noted. Most of the attacks on farm animals have happened in lowland areas while sightings tend to occur at the higher levels, Redfern disclosed. The attacks still go on to this day," he admitted. Redfern also said he has heard stories of human attacks and killings in the rain forests, as well as tales of captured chupacabras sent to local military installations before being shipped back to the U.S. mainland.

Warp Speed Space Travel

In the first hour, astrophysicist Geraint Lewis detailed his research which suggests warp speed space travel between galaxies could be a reality in the next 100 years. "You can actually get patches of space to move at any speed you want to in the universe," Lewis revealed. He pointed to Einstein's general theory of relativity which describes how space and time respond to mass and energy density. It is theoretically possible to concentrate mass and energy to warp space and time around a spaceship, Lewis explained, noting how space and time within the craft would be unaffected. The vehicle would be composed of negative energy material formed into a specific shape. It is the material itself that bends space and time, Lewis said.
