Strange & Unexplained/ Open Lines

About the show

With a life long interest in the paranormal, combined with his love of broadcasting and technology, podcaster Jim Harold joined Richard Syrett (filling in for George) to share accounts of the strange and unexplained from his True Ghost Stories: Jim Harold's Campfire series. Harold indicated that sincerity on the part of the storyteller is key in choosing which stories get published in his books. "It's very important that I believe that the person who is telling me the story believes what they say," he said.

Harold reported on a young girl who was overcome with sadness after finding a dead butterfly on the ground at her family's car dealership. Later that day, the girl's grandfather passed away and she drove to a park she'd never seen before. While there swarms of butterflies, more than she'd ever seen in her life, visited upon her, Harold noted. He related a skinwalker account told to him by a hotel security officer in New Mexico. According to the officer, a large dog-looking thing struck the bottom of his parked car and ran away on four legs. The officer gave chase but was knocked to the ground by something behind him, Harold revealed, adding that when the officer looked up he saw what appeared to be a nude man running away on two legs and screaming in a chilling human-animal voice.

Harold recalled the story of an 18-year-old Massachusetts resident who claimed to have experienced a shadow being at her boyfriend's house. She described waking up paralyzed and finding a 6-tall "blacker than black" shadow of a man standing at the end of the bed staring at her, he said. The shadow form stuck to the ceiling like a spider, moved toward her, then plopped on the bed between she and her boyfriend, Harold continued. The shadow creature vanished after she called on the name of Jesus, he said. Harold also commented on why hauntings seem to occur during home renovations as well as shared the account of a haunted recliner which its former owners claimed to have seen dragging itself down the street while spirits flew out from it. "This stuff is real and too many people have experienced it to think that it's not," Harold suggested.

Open Lines followed in the second half of the program. Dennis in Philadelphia connected paranormal activity to the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. He recalled an indecent at his own home where, after awaking from a nap in a paralyzed state, he watched as a black shadow moved down a set of creaky steps and into the kitchen. According to Dennis, as soon as the shadow passed by he was able to move again. John from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, wondered why he has not heard of Bigfoot hunters using tracking dogs. "They always say he stinks," John said, noting how easily a hound would be able to track the scent and possibly corner the elusive creature. Bo in Windsor, Ontario, phoned in to propose his theory that paranormal activity is caused by the interconnectedness of humans (and other living beings) on an unconscious level.
