Space, Gravity & NASA

About the show

In the middle two hours of the show, astrobiologist and astronomer Dr. David Darling spoke about cosmic mysteries such as dark energy, the "red rain" phenomenon which fell in India, and the danger of asteroids. Global warming, which has the effect of expanding the atmosphere, makes the Earth a bigger target for incoming objects, he noted.

He also discussed his latest book Gravity's Arc which takes a look at the central ideas about gravity from Aristotle to Galileo to Einstein. Gravity is one of the most familiar forces we know, he pointed out, yet it's also one of the most mysterious-- with new discoveries about dark matter and dark energy, and their relation to gravity just now beginning to emerge.

The last hour of the program featured Open Lines.

Shuttle Analysis

First hour guest, C2C science advisor Richard C. Hoagland offered commentary on the Shuttle mission. He pointed out that NASA is using technology that is now 25 years old and suggested the reason for this is that there are actually two space programs-- the one with public missions, and another which is more heavily funded and kept secret from the American public.
