Authors Tom & Lisa Butler played and discussed EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) which they believe are communications from the dead. The voices they record, Tom pointed out, are actually a "thickening of the background sound," rather than being produced by a voice box, and as such are sometimes hard to understand.

The collecting of EVPs is really a three-way interaction, between the recording mechanism, the experimenter/recorder, and the spirit or entity, the Butlers explained.Lisa said that they work with "spirit teams," entities who regularly appear on their recordings and sometimes follow them to locations such as Alcatraz, where they may serve to ward off harmful communications.

The Butlers have also worked with video and have accumulated a number of samples of anomalous material from this medium. They use a "video loopback" method, which Tom described as the exploitation of "optical noise" generated by the camera which then serves as a field for contact.
