Astronaut Scott Carpenter Dies at 88

Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter has died at the age of 88. "As one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, he was in the first vanguard of our space program — the pioneers who set the tone for our nation's pioneering efforts beyond Earth and accomplished so much for our nation," said NASA administrator Charles Bolden. Carpenter is pictured in the first row, on the right (next to John Glenn) in this 1962 photo of the Mercury astronauts. More here.
