A man on a dolphin sighting tour earlier this week spotted a glowing pod splashing through the waters of Newport Beach. The dolphins' spectacular neon lighting is the result of bioluminescent phytoplankton which give the surf, and anything swimming through it, an electric blue glow. Researchers think the phytoplankton bioluminescence is a defense mechanism against certain predators.
