Watch: College Football Coach Muses About the 'Storm Area 51' Craze

By Tim Binnall

A colorful college football coach with a penchant for musing about all manner of odd topics recently shared his thoughts on the 'Storm Area 51' phenomenon. At the close of his weekly press conference on Monday, a reporter asked Washington State's Mike Leach what he thought "goes on" at the notoriously secretive facility. Without missing a beat, the coach launched into a rather thoughtful take on the matter, postulating that the government probably uses the site to test "prototypes and things like that."

However, Leach conceded that "if they have found space men, or any Roswell stuff, that'd probably be where they would store it." He attributed the allure surrounding Area 51 to those fantastic rumors as well as the cryptic nature of the facility which boasts a "cold, no-one-allowed quality" to it. As for whether or not he'd storm Area 51, the coach quickly responded in the negative and amusingly suggesting that "they just might test out the stuff they’re testing on you to ensure that you don't get in there."

Indicative of someone who spends a considerable amount of time developing literal game plans, Leach also questioned the feasibility of such a caper. Noting that breaking into the site would require "trying to go through barbed-wire fence while there's a bunch of aircraft over the top of you," he also wondered what would happen should a massive siege of Area 51 be successful. "What are we to assume," he asked, "ten thousand people are going to go start digging through warehouses?"

Rather than storm the site, the coach suggested that aspiring Area 51 explorers "ought to have Burning Man or something instead," which is a pretty prescient perspective considering that several festivals have been created for September 20th with just such an idea in mind. The amusing moment at the press conference was actually not the first time that Leach has pontificated on the paranormal as, two years ago, reporters had him weigh in on whether or not Sasquatch exists and he surprisingly replied that "I hope there's Bigfoot, but my guess is there is not."
