In more than a billion years from now, as our sun becomes hotter and brighter, the last surviving creatures will be...microbes. Living deep underground, these so-called "extremophiles" will be the last to survive the heat, dryness, and poisonous atmosphere, but even they will eventually vanish as conditions become even worse, scientists noted at the recent National Astronomy Meeting.
