A fossil bed in China with a well-preserved set of dinosaurs and mammals frozen in death poses has long puzzled scientists. Now, a new analysis of the fossils and the sediments they were buried in suggests that an explosive volcanic eruption like the one that destroyed Pompeii is what killed the animals.
